Redecorating in Teal

I want to move into my own house in the Spring, and making my home comfortable is very important to me.

I have this bedding already and want to design around it. I don’t have the floral print, instead I have fur, gold, suede and wooden¬†decorative¬†pillows.

Matson stole my comforter that was in my car when I shipped it, so maybe I need to opt for new bedding or find a similar comforter.

This painting doesn’t have the cool color scheme but i feel it’s darkness and warmness would look great in my bedroom if I decided to go with warmer tones. Or in my bathroom. ¬†My bathroom has a lot of warm red tones. ¬†WIth the bedding set however, I can introduce some red and orange tones into accents.

Be an Educated Consumer

Ethical Consumerism is an important movement toward corporate reform. ¬† In the past, it was a goal for companies to drain every dollar from your pocket, by using provocative advertisements, catchy slogans, celebrity endorsements, demographic/age/sex profiling, highly developed psychological tactics and expensive marketing campaigns. ¬†In today’s economy, companies stress corporates responsibility to use ethical marketing tactics and build consumer awareness around their products.

Are you an educated consumer?  There are a lot of gray areas that we as consumers are unaware of.  Do you fully understand what factors complete your purchase?  Is it a memorable advertisement you saw in a magazine? Price?  Quality? Brand/Label? Design?  Did you walk in the store because a cute sales person was in the front?  Or did the smell of lemon scented candles entice your senses, envoking energy and positivity?

Today, one of the biggest trends in fashion is “going green.” ¬†The misconception, misinformed consumers face. ¬†Not all green is good. ¬†For example, green cotton may take more energy to crop and care for because the lack of pesticides. ¬†Bamboo is a great new green fabric, however it takes many synthetic chemicals to process is into a fabric. ¬†You need to carefully look into your products and manufacturing to truly understand the manufacturing, marketing, and distribution practices. ¬†For example, hybrid cars are suppose to be “energy efficient” vehicles that run off of electricity vs. gas, and better for the environment. ¬†Although the price of running it is lower, and you may get some free perks in certain cities, such as free parking, the carbon print is actually worse for the environment than your regular SUV.

In the past, I wrote a blog mocking PETA.  I personally am a huge fan of leather and fur.  I have several fur bags and shoes including mink, oscillot, and I would die for a leopard or a tiger fur.  #JUSTSAYING.   Fur and Leathers are a great natural textile that comes from the earth.  It is long lasting, strong, durable, warm, and high in quality.  I viewed some animal cruelty videos sent to me by some angry PETA members.  Although, I do believe they are cruel, I still stand by my opinions, that pushy PETA members trying to push their beliefs on the world is annoying.  Not all companies are run by cruel animal abusers.  I agree, there should be laws to prosecute employees not in correct practice of properly putting the animals under.

Another unethical practice in the world of fashion is the issue of manufacturing.   We all know that Nike pays children .25 a day to make shoes.  And in some areas in China, they are polluting the ocean with chemicals.  Does this affect YOUR purchasing choices?  With China owning our asses, and our nation in debt and economy in shambles, many believe it is ethical to boycott trades form China.  That would mean no more shopping at Walmart.  Did you know that our economy RELIES on the cheap affordable Chinese goods.  So doing so would hurt Americans.  China actually has laws limiting the number of imports that comes into the country.  That means they are hording the debt and hording the American dollar, which is bad for us.  So if we decide to stop buying from them, that could create a huge war between America and China.

I ‚̧ the Sexy American Apparel ads, but I never shop there.

American Apparel prides itself on it’s ethical employee environment and manufacturing practices. ¬†I don’t ever personally shop there, because I think it is overpriced medium quality clothing that I don’t really care for. ¬†But I believe a major marketing selling point for them is them being an ethical American company. ¬†Turns out, they run illegal sweat shops, and are being sued by employees for sexual harassment, poor working environments, and under minimum wage wages. ¬†As far as their marketing goes, their advertisements are super provocative. ¬†I see nothing wrong with provocative advertising, however, it is wise to recognize this as marketing tactics, and be knowledgable in the fact that it does not negatively impact our buying decisions as consumers.

the Unethical Ethics of American Apparel Facebook

That is the way of the world, and I don’t see things every changing or getting better. ¬†Corporations run the world. ¬†Poor ethics have become an irreversible way of trade. ¬†Globalization, corporations and unethical standards have become the standard.

Shopping For the Home

One of my favorite things to do is shop for my home. I’m one of those girls who has 50 pillows on my bed, matching lanterns and artwork and paintings. ¬†I can’t wait to ship my things back from Vegas back to Hawaii. ¬†My room is my sanctuary and I love to be comfortable and decorate my space with beauty.

Abbott Kinney in Venice Beach.

Cool ass fireplace at Beechwood.

Me and Sis @ Beechwood.

I had dinner at Beachwood in Santa Monica with my sister and her boyfriend.¬† It was delish!¬† I had a baked mac and cheese and shared some indian spiced lamb sliders with my sister.¬† After dinner, we decided to have ladies night.¬† Her boyfriend was busy with a bid on a contract for the Harry Potter movie, so he couldn’t party with us.¬† She took me to the Other Room at Abbott Kinney in Venice Beach, a trendy strip known for shopping and partying.

Other¬†Room¬†gave¬†me a loungy New York feel, with brick walls, deli-like chalk board beer menu and¬†dark decor with candelight.¬† I particularly enjoyed being surrounded by beautiful people.¬† I grabbed me a “Chimmay” because someone had told me to recently try it.¬† When I got my goblet of beer, I was surprised to see it say “Chimmay.”¬† It was a great full flavored beer, similar to a Blue Moon.

As we walked¬†towards the corner of the room, at a table sat one of my sister’s friends.¬† We immediately joined them.¬† It was interesting to talk to¬†his friend who¬†I thought was feeding me bullshit.¬† He was so refined and intelligent and¬†accomplished at such a young age.¬† But all Hollywood peoples are like that.¬† “Fake it till you make it.”¬† Or maybe he was telling the truth.¬† I pointed out that I like that artwork, and he began to boast and brag that he was the inspiration for the artist.¬†But¬†oh well.¬† I wasn’t trying to hook up.¬† I tried a sip of his beer with a lemon in it, and it is refreshingly light and¬†delicious.¬† One of my favorite beers to this day.¬† Similar to Blanche de Bruxelles.¬† His glass said “Allagash.”¬† Was I to understand that they had a special glass for every single beer that they had on the menu?

It was about Midnight.  I drove from Vegas to Cali that day on no sleep and I was exhausted.  My sister suggested the Brig, but I went home and got some sleep.

Gift Shopping on a Budget

Take my word for it.  I am the greatest gift shopper!

1. Bitch Wine Grenache

It’s a cheap wine, but the label is awesome! ¬†The taste is a little dry and bitter for my palate, but I usually buy a box of them and pass them out for Xmas Presents.

2. Light Up Rubber Duckies

For nieces and nephews, the light up duckies are awesome!  My sister first bought them for me at Sharper Image for my little girl.  Kids love them!  You can find deals on Amazon for them as low as $2 or $3 .

3. Izakaya Hawaii: Tokkuri Tei Cooking (book)

Find it on Amazon for around $35. ¬†Tukkuri Tei is an awesome Izakaya spot on Kapahulu! ¬†If your Mom love’s cooking, like mine, this would be an excellent gift.

4.  Stemless Wine Glasses.

I have these glasses in my cabinet. ¬†You can find a set of 4 for $10 on Amazon. ¬†Or $20 for a bigger set at Macy’s. ¬†If you want a more expensive set, you can get crystal glasses at Riedel in sets of 2 or 4, for usually about $10 per glass. ¬†Classy and Contemporary. ¬†These glasses are great!

5.  Oster 4207 Electronic Wine Opener

I hate opening wine bottles, so this is perfect!  On Amazon for under $20

6. 500 piece clay poker set

I’ve seen poker sets like this as much as over $100. ¬†I found it on Amazon for as low as $12.50.

7. 2 piece ceramic knife set $39.99

My sister had this little white ceramic knife,  and it chopped so well.  She bought it at IKEA.

I always see these at Pink Berry and various ice cream stores. ¬†They’re super cute, and inexpensive.

9. Issey Miyaki Perfume/Cologne

For him OR her. ¬†I wear Miyaki, and I always buy a bottle for my boyfriend. ¬†It smells sexy. ;D ¬†A bottle at a department store can be as much as $90. ¬†Check Amazon for specials, and I’m sure you can find it as low as $45.

10. Surf Blanks

I’m always super bad at finding a present for my Dad. ¬† Dad’s are hard to shop for. ¬†My Dad (or most Dad’s in Hawaii) wouldn’t want anything more than a custom surfboard (or 12 of them). ¬†Surf Blanks run way over $100. ¬†At You can find ¬†short blanks as low as $50, and tanks for a little under $100! ¬†They also sell “Bio Foam,” ¬†still at an affordable range between 50 and 60$.
